Japanese Variety Show Photo Recap Disclaimer: Since this is a recap of the show, there will be spoilers here. I’m watching this without English subtitles and while I understand a lot of Japanese, I’m not fluent. There are occasionally parts where I don’t understand what’s going on. And lastly, the photo captions are just snarky jokes and not meant to convey actual dialogue. So if you’re cool with all this, read on and enjoy!
So I thought it might be fun to put together a recap of an episode of Hey!Say!JUMP‘s variety show Itadaki High Jump. I won’t be able to do this regularly, but Itadaki is such a fun show, I thought I’d share at least one episode recap. If you’re unfamiliar with the show, the group basically gets a “case” to investigate or a challenge to try. Usually, it’s just one per episode. But for this episode (which is a continuation of last week’s episode), the whole group is trying out several small cases submitted by fans. This episode’s cases include fun with marshmallows, some singing, a good SHOCK, something smelly, and makeup. Let’s talk about it~!
With some hilariously optimistic enthusiasm, Takaki picks the first challenge, which he quickly learns is a terrible, terrible decision. Basically this case was about trying to discover which trick items give you the worst electric shock. Takaki’s excitement was a bit premature. The items are a microphone, candy jar, pen.
First up, the microphone. Takaki’s reaction to the shock:
But strangely enough, Chinen gets shocked too??
Actually, when Takaki dropped the mic, Chinen jumped away from it and tripped over the set!
So next up, Takaki tries the pen.
The last item is a fake candy jar. Hikaru gets to pretend to be old lady, giving it to Takaki as a gift.
Takaki falls to the ground for this one. Declares the candy jar the worst, to no one’s surprise.
Chinen volunteers for the next challenge and picks one about stomping your feet. His goal is to stomp his feet blindfolded in place for 30 seconds and see if he’s still in the same place afterwards.
After time is up, Chinen was shocked (not literally) to be facing Yuto instead of the camera!
The next case is chosen by Yuto. He picks the “Inoo Hotel” case that everyone was curious about during the last episode. Even Inoo can’t guess what it’s about. As it turns out, several fans said there was a hotel staff worker in Hiroshima whose voice sounded like Inoo’s. They call the staff worker and Inoo talked to that person on the phone for a bit and that was that. It was not the scandal they’d all hoped for. But the group did decide that the voices were sort of similar. (I didn’t really think so though. Did you?)
After Inoo’s hotel case is settled, Yamada picks a challenge concerning kakigouri (shaved ice) and brain freeze. I was a little lost on the exact details of this one but I think he was supposed to figure out if putting ice on your forehead helped with brainfreeze? If anyone can clarify, please feel free!
Luckily for Yamada, he really likes kakigouri. He rapidly starts eating the bowl when he suddenly winces in pain. “What hurts?” they ask. “My teeth!” he answers. “Not your head??” When he finally gets brainfreeze, they put ice on his forehead to see if that helps. NOPE. Only made it worse.
Yabu’s turn was also a bit strange for me to understand. This is one about school songs sung at high school graduations in Japan. A funny moment was when Yabu asked if there’s a variety of graduation songs that the group experienced and they remind him that almost all of them went to the same school! But what was even funnier than that? They ask Keito if his graduation song was in English because of the school he went to. He starts singing some sort of opera-y version of God Save the Queen. LMAO
So anyway, I’m not sure what his goal was, but it looked like Yabu was supposed to combine singing two of the most popular songs. Anyway, it turned out okay, so they moved on to the next challenge.
Much like Takaki’s earlier enthusiasm, Daiki cheerfully raises his hand to go next. Inoo, being silly like always, basically sticks his face in Daiki’s armpit when he raises his hand.
Also like Takaki’s enthusiasm turning into disaster, it turns out that Daiki picked a case concerning bee poop/urine. Yes, actually. More specifically, they have to decide whether it stinks or not. Inoo (the biggest troll of them all) says he’s excited about this one.
Everyone backs far, far away from Daiki and his small bottle of bee urine.
Unsurprisingly it smells HORRIBLE.
So, of course, everyone else gets a turn to sniff the jar. It goes as well as you can expect.
So with the question of bee poop finally settled, Hikaru volunteers to pick the next one: Would Yamada look good in “demon” makeup? Yamada follows a producer backstage to get ready and he looks a bit skeptical. But he’s a Johnny. He really ought to be used to dressing up in strange costumes by now! While the group is waiting, they move on to another challenge.
Inoo picks a simple one: how many marshmallows can you fit in your mouth? He got 18 in but then spit one out.
Then he laughed and spit them all out into the bucket. So the final total was 17. Keito played a round too and got a total of 16 in his mouth.
After the commercial break, Yamada finally appears in his “demon” makeup. The lights dim and music begins to play.
Yamada appears looking ridiculous.
But they decide the makeup suits him. CASE CLOSED
All in all, it was a solid episode! Everyone looked like they were having a ton of fun (except, of course, when they were sniffing bee poop). Lots of laughs to go around!
So what did you think of the episode! Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!
