Brief Thoughts on Jdramas: Part One

So this is a little feature I’ve put together where I give info and my opinion on different jdramas (and occasionally kdramas) that I’ve watched over the years. I’m just going to do three at a time in alphabetical order.

1 Litre no Namida

Title Translation: 1 Liter of Tears

Starring: Sawajiri Erika, Yakushimaru Hiroko, Nishikido Ryo, Jinnai Takanori

Theme Song: Only Human by K

Genre: Human/family

Number of Specials: One

Synopsis: Ikeuchi Aya is diagnosed with terminal illness. The series shows how she and the people around her deal with it. Based on a true story.

Opinion: This was the first drama I watched, but I definitely don’t recommend it to be the first drama anyone else watches. It’s pretty good but so very depressing. Not only does she have to deal with the internal struggle of coming to terms with her illness, but also the external struggles of how everyone around her reacts. It showcases both how cruel and how loving people can be.

Atashinchi no Danshi

Title Translation: The boys of my family

Starring: Horikita Maki, Kaname Jun, Okada Yoshinori, Mukai Osamu, Yamamoto Yusuke, Seto Koji, Okayama Tomoki, Kusakari Masao, Yamamoto Koji, Takashima Reiko, Eguchi Noriko

Theme Song: Infinity by Girl Next Door

Genre: Comedy/family

Synopsis: A homeless girl running from her father’s debt ends up being saved by an eccentric inventor. The catch? She has to marry him and “be a mother” to his six adopted sons.

Opinion: The premise to this series is crazy but that’s what makes it fun. The eccentric inventor has left behind all these fun challenges they must complete before receiving their inheritance. Each episode just gets more and more ridiculous, but there’s some nice character development throughout that stabilizes the plot. It’s one of those shows that gives you a nice fuzzy feeling when you’re done watching.

More detailed information on the series can be found here.

Attention Please

Starring: Ueto Aya, Nishikido Ryo, Maya Miki, Aibu Saki, Uehara Misa

Theme Song: OH PRETTY WOMAN by Kaela Kimura

Genre: Not sure how to categorize this one (maybe comedy?)

Number of Specials: Two (one in Hawaii and the other in Sydney)

Synopsis: A woman wants to become a flight attendant. As she goes through training, she learns how to be a proper lady and function well in society.

Opinion: It’s been a while since I’ve watched this but I definitely remember I didn’t like it. The show is full of everything I hate: bullying, unsympathetic characters, and a “women stay in the kitchen” sort of message. I suppose if you’re interested in flight attendants, it might be worth a watch, but that’s probably the only reason. I have absolutely no idea how this show got two specials. Also, this show completely ruined the song Pretty Woman for me.

So, readers, have you seen any of these dramas? Did you like them? Did you hate them? Agree or disagree with my opinions? Have recommendations of similar dramas? Just want to talk about how ridiculous the promotional posters are for these shows? Leave a comment if you’d like!
